PS. Over a thousand years ago, in medieval Britain, the Smiths were the craftsman, the metal smiths, the blacksmiths, who created the basis of society. Today I’m the creator Smith who, as a wordsmith, creates the society (again). With words, not the sword.

I Didn’t See This Coming.

Just when I was down-and-out, when my freelance copywriting business of 10 years had hit the skids, I went bankrupt.

Strange things started to happen.

What was going on?

You’d think I had started a new life without intending to.

New things, new ideas, new open doors were rushing towards me.

Which is where my story begins.

Right here.

My first thought was survival.

I needed a place to live.

Cheap.

I had nothing.

I’d been offered a small Victorian holiday flat in a quiet springs resort in the Wombat Forest about one and a half hours from Melbourne.

I packed all my stuff into my car and went to the Central Highlands.

My life, as I knew it, was over.

I arrived with nothing, to nothing, with nothing to do.

Soon I was offered an old caravan for almost nothing.

I moved in and lived there for the next 5 years.

Parked precariously outside my benefactor’s home in the hills I could relax at last.

He created evocative airbrush paintings under the house.

She was a devoted follower of Sai Baba, her Indian Hindu guru.

An interesting couple.

We had many inspiring conversations.

The kind of mental and spiritual stimulus I’d been missing in the corporate world.

It was my new life among the sweet smells of Nature and the soothing sounds of the birds and the waterfall outside the caravan.

I felt at home there to ponder my fate and, well, to recover from the stresses of the past.

Then something happened that woke me from my reflective mood.

A file of documents about an historical mystery fell into my lap.

There was a friendly ghost from the past.

I’d been given, very mysteriously, a new challenge and my mind was off again.

And that mysterious file was the start of a new adventure that had my mind racing in a whole new direction I had not anticipated.

No way.

Which is where the intriguing material from the mystery file grabbed my attention.

Which soon became the focus of a new and amazing true story.

A 250-page book, a true story.

I’ve given my book a knockout title.

A very different title for a very different kind of book.

Of survival without money.

Of the paranormal.

And of the romantic.

Of a hushed up secret from the early days of British exploration around Australia and New Zealand.

One reviewer calls it “fun and entertaining”.

It’s an exciting story that took me to the other side of the planet chasing clues to a true historical romantic mystery across 5 countries.

I’ll tell you more next time.

Could This Be Your Way To The Fairy Tale?

Could this be your way to the Fairy Tale, the sea change, the dream of a life that’s always seemed beyond your reach.

I’ve done it.

Stop where you’re at right now.

If life is not working for you, if you’re not in control, if you’re not happy with your life, then consider a new way of life that works.

Without the money worries, where trust is the new currency.

Without the games where you’re not in control of your own life and your own destiny.

Your struggles have not been your fault.

Have you been waiting what seems to be forever for that windfall, that lottery win that would take you out of all this?

Here’s the shocking truth.

You know the windfall will probably never come, chances are your money worries will never go away, you’re unlikely ever to be free of the day-to-day boredom of your job.

Well, I’ve done it, and I’ve written my amazing story, of living the Fairy Tale, the dream come true, with nothing.

When The Dust Clears . . . How Are We Supposed To Live?

You may not believe me when I say I’ve lived the good life with nothing for last 30 years. So I wonder, have I already lived the model for how we are supposed to live in the future?

There are secrets I wish to share.

Experiments in life that we would only tackle when our back was to the wall.

Some of my experiences were crazy.

I embarked on adventures I would never have even imagined had my life and small business not have crashed leaving me with nothing.

I lived in an old caravan in the Australian bush for 5 years, homeless, penniless and lost.

Then, what happened was an adventure I could never have contemplated or planned unless my back was to the wall.

Which is the title of the book I’ve written about what happened next.

It’s called ‘Man Steps Off Planet’.

But there’s more.

My experiences have made me realise that we need a whole new system of welfare to enable everyone, no matter what their financial situation, whether employed or living in poverty, to survive and to live a good life.

The philosophy has already been proposed, even tested in some countries, and supported by a long list of prominent business people and economists.

There’s Barak Obama, economist Milton Freidman, Mark Zukerberg, Bill Gates, Richard Branston, and a whole list of others.

It’s called a Universal Basic Income.

This world changing plan provides every citizen above a certain age, without a means test, to receive a guaranteed basic income, enough to survive.

Everyone would be free to earn a regular income as well or to do as they wished with the money.

It’s their choice.

With such a safety net anyone can follow their dreams, their passions, and still be successful over time.

Especially if time is what they need.

In my case, I tried to establish a new trend in advertising creativity.

I had no capital backing me and so my freelance copywriting business crashed and burned.

Same with my daughter who started her own massage business that went downhill through no fault of her own.

Who knows how many talented people have been struggling to survive after attempting to implement their potential genius.

But there are other secrets I learned on how to survive and thrive.

I certainly haven’t become depressed or settle for living in poverty.

Instead I’ve followed my lifetime dream to write and publish my own books and, in so doing, kept my brain active and alive.

I was able to work from home, wherever that was, even in a caravan.

It’s a secret to living a long and healthy life.

It’s been the secret of keeping alive following my passion for the past 30 years.

Nothing should hinder the urge to follow our passion, even if for artisans, for example, the income that those passions generate take time to materialise.

Which is a good reason why the world needs the support of a Universal Basic Income.

Is it so crazy to suggest that the time to prepare for the future is now?

I share my other big secrets in my book ‘Man Steps Off Planet’.

I’ll give you a hint. You might be surprised to know that I was greatly influenced by Napoleon Hill’s bestseller ‘Think & Grow Rich’ (click to view video) combined with Stuart Wilde’s ideas (click to view video).

Best wishes

Survival Outside The Square

Survival from nothing.

I’ve been there and I know how to turn survival on its head.

I did it and I’m still here to tell you how.

In my inspirational book I outline the steps I took outside the nine dots.

Which is not what everyone else will tell you.

Because I’m different.

I didn’t fall for the usual advice based on money.

To me survival isn’t about the money.

I’ve proved it.

For me it’s about our life and how we were meant to live it.

It’s about our destiny, about letting go, about being open to the new which may be waiting for us the wings.

My book starts off with bankruptcy.

And my life was all uphill from there.

Like I said, it’s not about the money.

It’s about my life.

It’s about everybody’s life.

Ultimately, it’s about finding happiness and fulfilment.

It’s about being there for your family when they need you.

And it’s about having fun while you still can.

Ask yourself, is this the sea change I’ve been dreaming about?

So here’s the shocking truth about my need to survive after my life and career in advertising crashed and burned.

This is when my real life began.

Isn’t that all about our perspective?

Whether your life or career is in trouble, or has already crash landed, think outside the nine dots and think about starting the life you were meant to live.

I did.

Is It True, We Get Nothing For Nothing & There Are No Free Lunches?

I know, these are two widely accepted ideas we have come to live by.

Don’t expect to get anything for nothing.

You need to earn what you receive.

Wait a minute,

My experience of the past 30 years has been quite the opposite.

After I lost everything when my one-man freelance copywriting business and I went bankrupt, leaving me with nothing, something amazing happened.

Total strangers came from everywhere to help me out.

They expected nothing in return.

But then, instinctively, I sought to give back for their kindness.

I don’t quite know how to explain it but the only payment I could give back was of myself.

Nothing of value.

Just me.

I had nothing else to give.

And therein lies a hidden secret of life, an unrecognised unseen Law of Life.

I’ve described how this happened to me for 30 years of my life in my book ‘Back to the Wall’.

Read the book and see how this Law worked for me.

This hidden Law of Life is expressed in Newton’s Third Law of Motion where we have to complete the formula, fill in the missing part, to make it work.

For every action in one direction, the Law states, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

So when we are faced with a generous action in our direction we must offer the equal and opposite reaction to complete the working of the Law of Physics.

This is an otherwise unknown Law of Life that will always operate in your favour because it’s a Law of Physics.

Except that it’s the non-physical equivalent of the physical Law.

So are there non-physical Laws that are equally true of all physical Laws?

I believe so.

At this point you must be asking, even so, how did you survive?

While accepting a small disability pension, for my disabilities, I have given back by continuing to use my one true talent, to write.

Books.

You can find them here.

But what about everyone else, how are they to survive without a basic income?

I believe that what is called a ‘Universal Basic Income’ has a lot of merit where everyone would automatically receive from the government a fixed basic income every month.

Everyone would be entitled to earn an independent income as well, run a business, have a job, just as before, but there would always be a basic income guaranteed so that no-one need live in poverty.

No-one.

Of course, we would all be free to use this basic income as we wish, some would use it to live free of debt, others would be tempted to squander it away.

There are pros and cons.

There will be some who will rort the system (just as there are today).

The system has been tried in many places around the world.

And has been supported by Martin Luther King Jnr, Sir Richard Branston, economist Milton Friedman and Facebook founder Chris Hughes.

You can read about the Universal Basic Income and its pros and cons here.

I’d be pleased to read your comments on what I have written here.

Best wishes.

My 10 Point Plan To Survive From 0.

Are you caught in a struggle to survive? Is your back to the wall? Would you like to know about my 10 Point Plan that worked for me? I’ve don’t it and I want to show you how to survive too with no money and no hope to ever get above it all.

You’re going to have to impose strict measures and stick to them.

But if it works, hey, it’s worth it in the end.

It needs self discipline but only as long as it takes to get back on top.

Isn’t that what you want?

Erica Jong wrote in her book ‘Fear of Fifty’, “Only at the bottom can you decide when to live or die.”

You’re going to decide to “live”, right?

I’ve outlined how I did it in my true romantic mystery adventure ‘Back to the Wall’. It’s an essential part of my story.

Okay, then this is how you can do it.

1. Let go. Take a step back and let’s see everything, your whole life, in a new light. There’s a spiritual principle of “letting go” in the Tao (an ancient Chinese spiritual philosophy) which was my number one secret and which had almost magical consequences.

2. Self discipline. One of the first things I did, and the first thing you should do, is to start a daily policy of “nothing over $2” (my figure was $2, you choose your own). This includes supermarket items. In other words, you need to stop spending money except for essentials.

3. Spending rule. This is one of those times we need to be prepared to make sacrifices we wouldn’t normally even think about. I’m talking about the small things we take for granted. I’ve outlined them in my book: no takeaways, no eating out, no daily papers, no impulse purchases, no new clothes or accessories, no movie visits. I even sold my car so, if you can manage it, then do it. And start paying off your credit card(s) as soon as you can.

4. Convert to cash. I was amazed at how much stuff I could convert to cash. Hold a garage sale. Sell books to a used bookshop. What can you sell on eBay? What can be recycled?

5. What’s your passion? The line from the song in the movie ‘Flash Dance’ says it all: “Take your passion, make it happen”. Believe that it’s waiting there for you to make the first move. So make the move, then see what happens. If a door opens, walk through it, if it doesn’t open, make another move or try another passion.

6. Go with the flow. It’s another Taoist principle and it’s how I moved on in my new life. Keep in mind that many famous people had to wait for their first lives to fail, then start a second (successful) life. When we go with the flow and stop forcing things, I’m convinced we are met by an energy, if you like, an invisible magic carpet that carries us on in a way we can only trust and go with it.

7. What you think is what you get. When we become emotionally involved in anything, be it our own problems or the world’s negativity, our thoughts create more of the same. When we pay attention to what we are thinking then we are going to change our own reality.

8. Aim to live off the grid. This might take a while, even cost money, but if you start working to it now like growing your own food, you can expand your plan a bit at a time as you save.

9. Sell the home, move to the country and rent cheap.

10. Sell the car. It’s a major financial burden.

My book tells how I did it, in minute detail, starting from nothing, bankrupt, homeless, penniless, jobless and friendless. Adjust to suit your own circumstances.

I know this all seems a little harsh but it’s the only way to escape struggle street.

Now read the book and see how it worked for me.

Copy and paste into your own life.

Best wishes,

Neil

I Don’t Want To Be A Millionaire, I Just Wanna Live Like One

That was a throw away line from a Dean Martin song, the name of which escapes me.

I only have a vision in my mind, a memory of the movie, of him and Jerry Lewis carefully carving up a single baked bean to share between the two of them.

That was their meal, half a bean each, and I can certainly relate to that.

Can you?

My point is that we don’t need to desperately want to be millionaires to feel that way, do we.

Do you really want to live in a mansion?

Think of the cleaning.

Are you with me?

Millionaire is fine but living like one is far more realistic, is it not?

We all talk about winning the lottery to have a couple of million.

In the meantime, let’s think about how we can live like one.

Let’s talk about living like millionaires and leave being one to those who would have us be ‘successful’ in a world of so-called successful millionaires.

If that’s what we want.

I tried that.

So do many other people and fall flat on their faces.

Then who will pick up the pieces?

That line of Martin sums up the sentiment behind my thinking about my life.

These days are the days of the podcast and the webinar.

What an ugly name for an online seminar held in some guy’s or gal’s living room while they spend the first 15 minutes telling us how great they are and how buying their hugely expensive training (also of webinars) is about how to make money.

And their secret is getting people on their mailing list which is a modern day equivalent of door-to-door selling.

My poor Dad lost his job in the 1960s and ended up selling life insurance door-to-door.

Or trying to.

I used to feel so sorry for him, his struggles took away all of his dignity.

That shouldn’t be how you must live your life, selling your soul.

If that is ‘success’ then I have found, by accident, a better way.

A way in which you are living like a millionaire without selling your soul to be one.

I did it and you can do it too.

And I know the secret.

Since then I have formulated a ‘Blueprint’ which I want to share with you.

Based on what I did, instinctively, and what you must do to live like a millionaire without selling your soul to get there, and stay there.

That’s why I don’t want to be a millionaire or to be a success by door knocking (or its equivalent), or wasting my time watching webinars, why I don’t want to be endlessly selling my soul to get there and stay there.

For a start, read my book and cut-and-paste into your own life and your own circumstances.

Let me give you a single underlying clue: it’s about quality of life, not money.

My book is called ‘Back to the Wall: A Fun Spiritual Adventure’.

I wish you well.

Wild White Man

'Frederick William Woodhouse 'The First Settlers Discover Buckley'
‘Frederick William Woodhouse ‘The First Settlers Discover Buckley’

He’s been called the Wild White Man.

Here’s why.

A number of convicts had escaped from the Sullivan’s Bay settlement in the south, just 15 years after the first convicts arrived to establish the first settlement at Sydney Harbour in 1788.

All but one had either been killed, disappeared or returned in desperation to give themselves up.

The one surviving escapee, William Buckley, has been written into the local folklore and the Australian vernacular. To have ‘Buckley’s hope’ – or just ‘Buckley’s’ – has come to mean to have little hope.

This extraordinary story of survival in a natural and hostile environment is told in my book ‘Back to the Wall’.

He was found by a group of aborigines whose leader had only just died and, since Buckley was over six feet tall and the first white man they’d ever seen, they believed him to be the returned spirit of their deceased leader.

The Wathaurong aborigines cared for him and taught him their social order and ways of survival in the bush.

They even gave him a wife.

For 32 years the ‘wild white man’ Buckley lived with these original inhabitants on a peninsula south-west of present-day Melbourne and across the bay from Sullivan’s Cove.

As a young boy I’d come with my family for our annual holidays to this very spot. I recall standing in awe at the entrance to Buckley’s Cave beneath the lighthouse where he is said to have lived.

I would imagine this huge man with a wild beard and long unkempt hair residing inside in the darkness watching me standing there on the sand outside.

He truly captured my imagination as a boy even though, at the time, I knew only vaguely of him as an Aussie version of Robinson Crusoe.

Read more, order your copy here.

Fast forward 32 years to John Batman’s famous landing party sailing from the new settlement in Hobart Town, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), with the intention of claiming the site on which Melbourne now stands.

John Batman was the son of a convict mother and convict father and was married to a convict woman.

He set out from Van Diemen’s Land in 1835 with a party of three European servants and seven aborigines.

They sailed up the river known by the aborigines as Yarra Yarra (meaning ‘flowing water’), declaring this to be “the place for a village”.

A short distance upstream he negotiated the purchase of the land on which Melbourne now stands with the local aboriginal tribe at a spot right behind the playing fields of my old high school.

He purchased a hundred thousand acres of land in exchange for flour, blankets, scissors, tomahawks, looking-glasses, various items of clothing and alcohol.

His party then returned to Van Diemen’s Land.

A few months later an advance party returned to settle permanently on their new land which, unknown to them, was illegal without the approval of the Crown (which they didn’t have).

On landing at Indented Head inside Port Phillip Bay not far from Buckley’s Cave they ran into a wild white man dressed the same as the natives.

It was William Buckley the convict who had escaped 32 years earlier. He had forgotten how to speak English, speaking instead the language of his aboriginal tribe.

He was persuaded to go with the party of settlers and was eventually granted a pardon after agreeing to work between the two races to help relationships between them.

So how does this strange story of the ‘wild white man’ fit in with the mystery in the book?

What other fascinating true stories are told in my book?

Find out HERE.
